What is The Tin Man?

The Tin Man

St. Paul, MN

October 28th, 2012

3:00p.m.

The Tin Man is essentially an abbreviated Ironman style event.  The intent is to provide participants with a unique and fun way to engage in an athletic activity while keeping the duration of the event short enough that there is time left for fun afterward.  Observers will not need to wait hours to get a glimpse of their favorite participant(s) and can see them three times throughout the event without even leaving the comfort of the starting line.  Participants will hopefully be able to relax and enjoy themselves after completing the event.

The Tin Man Event consists of a competitive swim, a scenic bike race, and a similarly scenic run.

The Swim:  The swimming portion of the event consists of having one gallon of water dumped over the participant's head or body.  Participants are allowed to dry themselves off, or even change clothes completely before begining the next leg of the event.

The Bike:  After completing their swim, participants will particpate in a 2.85 mile bike ride that will take them .55 miles along a beautiful stretch of Victoria Street in the Como Park Neighborhood.  Where Victoria St. intersects with the Como Lake Bike Path participants will follow the bike path 1.75 miles counter clockwise around the lake and then get back on Victoria St. and return .55 miles along the very same beatiful route to the starting line.

The Run:  Once back at the starting line, participants will leave their bikes behind and begin a 2.72 mile run.  Participants will make the now familiar trek .55 miles along a beatiful stretch of Victoria St. in the Como Park Neighborhood.  When Victoria St. intersects with the Como Lake Walking Path participants will have their choice to go clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on their personal preference, 1.62 miles around this splendid urban oasis.  Upon completion of one lap around the lake, participants will once again find themselves at Victoria St. and will want to complete the final .55 miles of the run along a beautiful stretch of Victoria Street to reach the finish line.

The Crowd: Size of the crowd will depend upon the number of participants and the general interest of the participants' loved ones, co-workers, family members and friends in seeing their participant complete this rigorous challenge.  The crowd can watch from the starting line and will have the opportunity to see their participant at no less than three different states of physical exhaustion or crowd members may choose to watch from any vantage point along the race route.

The Gathering:  At the completion of the event participants and crowd members are welcome to stay and the start/finish line for a social gathering where they will be able to begin telling the tale of their exploits and inflating their sense of accomplishment to whatever degree of greatness they feel they have achieved.  A complementary beverage will be made available to all participants.
